Not only this will save your money but will also give you a chance to spend some quality time with your family that has become quite difficult nowadays. All you will require are some household products along with medium grit sandpaper and giving a custom look to a planter with Rust-Oleum spray paints.

  • Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Gloss Protective Enamel – Gloss Tuscan Sun
  • Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Textured Metallic Spray – Silver (Optional)

Step 1: Preparation

Preparation

Since you are working with spray paints, proper ventilation and a dust free environment are essential. It provides better coating as well as saves you from sudden injuries. Also, wear gloves and a mask while spray painting, especially if you’re spraying in a confined space like a garage. Moreover, place a drop cloth to cover and protect your workplace from overspray. For better result, we recommended working on a table for this project. If you’re spraying multiple planters, keep them at distance to avoid overspray.

Step 2: Sand and Wipe the Wooden Planter Box

After completing the preparation, you need to sand the wooden box thoroughly by using a medium grit sandpaper sponge. Make sure to sand the box in the same direction as the wood grain, and don’t miss the box’s edges and corners. Once you have finished sanding, use a dry cloth or tack rag to remove the crate from your wooden article and ensure that the wood is free from all debris.

Step 3: Prime the Planter Box

Primer creates a smooth and consistent layer to paint for an even surface that has excellent adhering. For spray painting wood, you can use Bulls Eye 1-2-3 Plus Primer that offers maximum coverage to the surface. To apply the primer, shake the cane of Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 Plus Primer Spray until you can hear it rattle. Then, apply the primer on the box in a steady, sweeping motion.

Step 4: Spray Paint the Planter Box

Once the primer has dried, you can apply paint on it. First and foremost, Shake the spray-cane of Stops Rust Protective Enamel in Gloss Tuscan Sun vigorously for a minute and make sure that mixing ball begins to rattle. In case mixing ball fails to rattle, “Do not strike spray-cane. Contact Rust-Oleum. Hold the cane 10-16 in. away from the surface and spray in a steady back and forth motion. Apply two or more light coats a few minutes apart.

If you want to complement your yellow planter, you can spray another planter with Stops Rust Textured Metallic Spray in Silver. Consider using the Comfort Grip in case you’re spraying multiple planters. This will keep your finger from getting tired during continuous spraying. 

Now, let your painted planter dry thoroughly. Once it’s dry, add flowers to the planter and place on your deck to enjoy!!
