Over the past few decades, chalkboards have certainly come a long way! What once was a slate that students completed their school work on, now has become a visually appealing feature of the classroom and home. Nowadays, chalkboards are used for various purposes. For example, in a work place, these boards are used to make presentations and to display graphs, pictures, notices, and fliers. Other than this, you might have noticed one of these boards at a coffee place or at a restaurant. However, there is one place where having a chalkboard is extremely convenient i.e. your home in the form of to-do list-maker, kids drawing board or as a calendar. Interestingly, creating a chalkboard wall or chalkboard calendar is so easy that it can be done by anyone. Keeping the same in mind, we have come up with some DIY techniques of making colored chalkboard calendar, take a look!!

Step 1: Prepare the Surface

Once you’ve selected the space for your chalkboard calendar project, first inspect it properly. Make sure the wall surface is free from all the imperfection such as protruding nails or screws, loose paints tough spots, etc. If you find any of these imperfections on your wall surface to be painted with chalkboard paint, clean them completely. Also, if you have textured wall, it is recommended to make it as smooth as possible. In the end, wipe the wall down with a lint-free cloth. Let it dry completely before proceeding further.

Step 2: Tape off the Area to be Painted

Tape off the area to be painted by using painter’s tape and create a border for your chalkboard calendar. Also, cover nearby items with a drop cloth to protect against paint drips. Now, using a measuring stick and painter’s tape, create a matrix of “five rows and seven columns” for the chalkboard calendar. For the month name, make a rectangle using the painter’s tape.

Step 3:  Apply the Chalkboard Paint

Read the instruction carefully mentioned on the side of the Rust-Oleum Tintable Chalkboard paint before applying it on the wall. The most interesting thing about this product is that it is a tintable chalkboard paint which means you can give any color to the surface you want just by adding the desired color water base tinter color into the solution. For example: if you want to get the surface in green color, just mix green water base tinter color into the solution.

To use this product, first stir the paint thoroughly. Then, using a high-quality foam roller or foam brush to apply a liberal coat to the tape-off-area of the wall. Avoid excessive rolling and use light, even strokes for an even and smooth finish. Apply 2-3 coats of chalkboard paint to get a better result. After completing all the coats, remove the tape and let the painted surface dry thoroughly or at least for 24 hours.

Step 4: Prepare the Board for its First Use

Before you start using the board, prepare it first by rubbing chalk over the entire surface. Allow this chalk to stay for a few seconds and then wash the chalk off again using a wet lint-free cloth. After finishing this process, your chalkboard calendar is ready to be used.
