How to Apply Rust-Oleum Varathane Premium Fast Dry Wood Stains?
Surface Preparation
Remove any existing finishes with sandpaper or paint stripper. Prepare bare wood for staining by sanding in the direction of the grain. Begin with 120 grit sandpaper and progress though 150, 180 and 220 grits. Before staining, remove all sanding dust and dirt with a vacuum and grease or glue with a clean rag dampened with mineral spirits.
Stain Application
Apply when temperatures are between 60-90°F (16-38°C) and the relative humidity is below 85%. Allow longer dry times for damp, humid days. Use adequate ventilation at all times. Use full strength. Do not dilute. Stir or shake the container thoroughly before and occasionally during use.
Apply a test sample on a small inconspicuous area before proceeding with the entire job. Apply one coat of stain liberally with a good quality brush or clean lint free rag. Allow to penetrate for 5-10 minutes then remove excess by wiping with a rag in the direction of the grain. Removal of all excess material is essential to ensure proper dry time and proper adhesion of topcoat.
