How to Apply Varathane Whitewash Wood Enhancer

Surface Preparation: Eliminate any current finishes using sandpaper or paint stripper. Prep bare wood for staining by sanding along the grain. Start with #120 grit sandpaper and progress through #150, #180, and #220 grits. Prior to staining, ensure removal of all sanding debris and dirt with a vacuum, and tackle any grease or glue residue with a clean rag dampened in mineral spirits.

Application:When using multiple cans, combine all contents into a separate container and mix thoroughly to ensure uniformity. Before and during use, stir or shake the material well. For optimal results, apply at a temperature ranging between 60°F and 90°F. Expect a 1-hour drying time, but allow for extended drying on damp or humid days.

For a consistent coat of Whitewash over bare or stained wood, apply generously with a brush or clean, lint-free rag. Let it sit for 2-3 minutes to penetrate, then remove excess to ensure proper drying and adhesion of the topcoat by wiping with a rag along the grain. Longer penetration times will result in a more opaque layer of Whitewash. After 1 hour, a second coat can be applied to achieve the desired opacity.

For a distressed dry brush appearance over bare or stained wood, dip the tip of a dry bristle brush into the Whitewash. Dab it on a cloth until semi-dry, then use light, feathery strokes following the wood grain. Allow 1 hour to dry.

For a vintage Whitewash layer over paint or stain, once the paint or stain is completely dry, lightly sand the entire piece using #220 grit sandpaper and remove dust. Cover the entire surface with Whitewash and let it penetrate for 30 seconds. Wipe away to achieve the desired effect. Allow 1 hour to dry.

Protecting Wood Surface: For comprehensive protection and to finalize your wood project, consider finishing with a water-based Varathane Polyurethane, selected based on your project requirements. Polyurethane can be applied just 1 hour after the application of the Whitewash or Wood Refresher.
