Application for Varathane Wood stain Instructions

Surface Preparation: Remove any existing finishes using sandpaper or a paint stripper. To prepare bare wood for staining, sand in the direction of the grain. Start with #120 grit sandpaper and progressively move to #150, #180, and #220 grits. Before applying the stain, eliminate all sanding dust and dirt with a vacuum, and clean any grease or glue using a rag dampened with mineral spirits.

NOTE: Ensure you test your stain to confirm the desired color. Apply the stain in an inconspicuous area to verify the results.

Application: Apply when temperatures are between 60-90°F (16-38°C) and the relative humidity is below 85%. On damp or humid days, allow for longer drying times. Ensure adequate ventilation at all times. Use the stain at full strength—do not dilute it. Stir or shake the container thoroughly before and occasionally during use.

Before starting the entire project, apply a test sample on a small, inconspicuous area. Apply one coat of stain liberally with a high-quality brush or a clean, lint-free rag. Allow the stain to penetrate for 2-3 minutes, then remove the excess by wiping in the direction of the grain with a rag. Removing all excess material is crucial to ensure proper drying time and adhesion of the topcoat.

Dry Time: Dry times are based on conditions of 70°F and 50% relative humidity. Variations in temperature, humidity, and ventilation can affect drying times, with cooler temperatures requiring more time. Fast Dry Stain dries to the touch in approximately 1 hour and can be recoated after 1 hour. Allow 24 hours for the stain to fully cure.

Protection: For long-term protection and durability, topcoat your project with Varathane Polyurethane. You can apply the polyurethane within 1 hour of applying the stain. Note that darker colors may require slightly longer drying times before applying the topcoat.
